They still don't know who gave it that catchy name and what type of players started to gather there. One is for sure, KeKo is still the most popular Roc channel where all type of players meet and share their experiences. Well, that is how it was in the past.
Everything changes and in Roc changes are usually going from better to worse. People tend to destroy everything that comes in their hands no matter how good, not to say, perfect it is. My biggest example when I am explaining how people are evil is abuse of ladder's match making system. But, wont talk about that because today I am giving my full attention to our favorite public channel.
Players were always wondering who gave it that name and what does it mean. You won't find such information on internet. However, I do remember some debates and argues over it. There are different opinions and I will mention the most popular ones.
First is that KeKo comes from word "kek" which is the other word from "lol". Adding "o" in the end which stands for "operator" people believed that KeKo is a fun place where players gather to take and laugh. Fun operator to be precise. I don't like this interpretation and I don't think that it holds grounds.
Second is that KeKo came from word "kekoa" which is the other word for surfing. It is believed that it lost "a" in the end at the time when first KeKo clan was made. I don't like nor believe this interpretation.
Third and in my opinion, the most logic and trusted one is that KeKo came from word "ke-ko" which is a definition for ants hill. I believe that this is the best interpretation because KeKo players sometimes really remind of ants because there are so many of them in such a small place.
KeKo was "created" right after battle.net was launched in 2002. I believe that people massively started to join it somewhere in September. Soon after that it became so popular that chances of joining it were very low. Once someone joins it usually stays there for very long time because being there was a great privilege.
Shoulder to shoulder to amazing players who were resting their fingers from hard games they have just played newbies had a chance to admire them on daily basis. Often picking a right time to ask for AT even tho they knew that the answer will be negative they somehow managed to succeed in their intention. Their intention was to get the answer, a short conversation with their idols. Even after they get rejected for AT or a custom game they would express their gratitude because their idol took time to give them the answer.
Players were kindly asking eachothers for AT or writing in public using /emote command that everyone who wants to play AT make a whisper. Now and then you could see a little flame war but nothing like today.
Back in the time when Stealthbot and other bots didn't exist there wasn't any type of advertisement in KeKo. Players weren't forced to look in wall of text messages that are displayed to them the moment they join the channel and each minute they spend in it.
Spambots which use thousand of generated CD keys, of course, were just a dream of a wannabe hacker kids. Nothing could slip through Blizzard's fingers because the game was new and popular. Like KeKo.
Today, KeKo is a depony for the lowest types. Empire of peons, kingdom of spamming bots, promised land of abusers, home of trolls and wannabes of all colors. Not a minute passes by that you don't get reminded that someone is searching partner for AT free loosing or that some weirdo people are hosting tournament in two weeks. Take a look because picture worth a thousand words.
THANK YOU FOR NOTIFYING US |
Every second you get informed about things you don't want to know and each time you have to manually squelch these abusive bots. Okay, I know what you are going to say! Just squelch them? I can do that but lets look at the cause as the main problem, right?
Wish that it was that easy and that these bots are only problem that is tormenting this old channel. Wannabes and trolls are sometimes funny but when they are trying too hard they become annoying. Look at this one using illusions spell to make 7 copies of himself in order to look bigger and stronger.
TROLL AND HIS ILLUSIONS |
So we have spamming bots, insane trolls and what else? Green faces of course! Those 3/0 Solo stats pro-gamers who are offering to level your account for real money and who are constantly asking you to play 1on1 versus them. Take a look at this screenshot which was taken during the day.
DINKER AND PEONS |
Isn't that just sick? Look at them. They look so naive that you could actually believe them. But please, take my advise and stay away from them.
To sum it all up. KeKo has great history and it used to be great place. People who want to boost their ego destroyed it the same way they destroyed the spirit which I am trying to recover. They still don't understand that we are all one big body and by intentionally hurting one part of it they are harming everyone. They don't understand mostly because they feel hurt most of the time.
Killing KeKo with spambots is act of those who envy it for having so many players who visit it. Those who daily spam it tend to create unpleasant atmosphere for everyone who would then switch to other channels. Switching to other channels that are operated by spammers is their main intention. Destroying KeKo, which is original and it has been original for more than a decade, copies, other channels, are representing themselves as less worse than original which is in this case KeKo. Don't hand over our favorite channel to their bots!
Trolls and greenface wannabes, please find another channel. Sometimes its amusing but now when you started to replicate and create illusions of yourself it became serious.
For spammers, trolls, wannabes, greenfaces and everyone who is potential part of these groups I suggest new channel name. Channel The Void.
Lol ending. Reading the whole post was worth it for that. I remember KeKo from day 1, I'm pretty sure there was a Keko2 for some period of time, but I never bothered joining it, the original was where all the action was.
